Championship baseball in Rustburg -- The Dixie Youth 9 and 10 year old District Tournament, Rustburg American taking on Amherst in the title game. First inning, look at the catch made by centerfielder Kyle Thompson. The diving catch robs Amherst of a hit.
Move to the 4th, Rustburg up 1-nothing. Carson Stanley up to bat. He ropes one into right. Drew Calohan comes into score and it's 2-zip. Same score in the 4th, Amherst gets on the board. Joel Caulkins singles to right. Greg O'Brien was on second. He hustles home to get them on the board. It's 2-1.
To the 6th and final inning. Amherst down to their last strike. Caulkins again comes through with a base hit. There's going to be a play at the plate. Matt Lott's throw is on the money, he's OUT. Game over. Rustburg American wins a thriller 2-1.
Andy Calohan, Rustburg American Manager - "We played real hard. Like I said, we hit the ball, hit the ball real well. We didn't make mistakes in the field. Made the routine plays and made a few extraordinary plays during the tournament and things like that usually make you come out on top."

Some of the bigger boys were on the field Tuesday night in Forest. Big Island hosting Rocky Mount in American Legion Ball.
First baseman Joe Washburn hammers one to left in the top of the first to give Rocky Mount a quick 1-0 lead. Trailing 3-0 in the second, Big Island's Jake Tanner helped rally Post 217, which scored twice on sac flies to pull within 3-2.
Rocky Mount tacked on a run in the third on Michael Hodges' gapper to right center. But Big Island answered with four runs in the third to take its first lead, John Hatcher lines one over third scoring Josh Storm and Shane Timberlake to tie the game at four. Later, Tanner beats out an infield single, two runs score.
Big Island goes on to win 13-6.

And junior Legion NABF action also at Forest Middle, Bedford's Clay Carimi threw a seven-hit shutout against Forest, striking out 7, he also went 2-for-3 at the plate. Bedford got three runs in the fifth to break open a tight game, adding one here in the seventh. Justin Wirt banged out three hits for Forest, but Bedford wins in a shutout 6-0. Central Virginia is hosting the NABF World Series starting July 23rd.
