The General Assembly is back to finish the special session and it's shaping up to be a long night for lawmakers. At issue still -- how to solve the transportation funding shortfall. One of the big topics of discussion is increasing the gas tax.
That's what Senate democrats proposed, but the idea isn't sitting well with either side in the House. An increase in the gasoline tax would raise $300 million dollars to make up some of the transportation budget shortfall and numbers from the Northern Virginia Transportation Alliance show that Virginia's gas tax is one of the lowest in the country. But local lawmakers say now is not the time to raise the price of gas.
Del. Ben Cline, (R) 24th District - "With four dollar a gallon gas, families can't afford any higher prices including the gas tax increase."
Del. Shannon Valentine, (D) 23rd District - "We are trying to be responsible to the fact that there are tremendous rising costs in energy and this is a very difficult time to take these measures."
Del. Kathy Byron, (R) 22nd District - "Going forward in a time when the economy is struggling to increase the gas tax the grantors tax and other fees we're being imposed upon is just not the right thing."
And a surprise move Wednesday by Republicans in the House. They've resurrected Governor Kaine's transportation plan.
