Campbell County Public Safety is getting a big lift in its mission to fight fires. As the county sees more and more diverse development, it's creating a need for more advanced equipment. Fire crews there are now able to fight fires at any building in the county.
Bill Bigham, Campbell County Fire Commissioner "How in the world can you put a price on somebody's life? And with a piece of equipment like this, it's really going to enable these volunteers to help those that need it."
With this new aerial platform, Campbell County Public Safety will be able to battle blazes at 100 feet in the air. Truck 15 is going to allow fire crews to fight fires at places like Wards Crossing West and Spring Hill Suites.
Eddie Gunter, Campbell County Supervisor, Concord District - "The good news was we appropriated $800,000 and we came a little bit under that budget. So we got a good price on the truck as well as the renovations to the fire department."
The money came from the county's capital improvement plan paid for by Campbell County tax payers. The new truck is being housed at the Lyn-Dan Heights Volunteer Fire Department, but all eight volunteer fire companies in Campbell County will be able to use this truck. Plus, with mutual aid agreements, fire officials say it can be used to help other departments within the Lynchburg-area do more than just fight fires.
Randall Johnson, Asst. Fire Marshall of Campbell County - "Carry a multitude of tools to the fire scene, where we might not use the ladder, but it's kind of like bringing a tool box to the scene. Extra saws, extra ground ladders. Things of that sort."
Thursday, fire fighters trained on the truck and some faced their fear of heights.
Brian Hubbard, Lyn-Dan Heights Volunteer Fire Department - "Comes time you got to get over it and there's a job to be done. You just got to face the fear and get over it."
Bigham says this is the largest purchase the fire commission has ever made, but it's worth every penny. Bigham says the fire companies will continue training on the new equipment. He hopes to have the platform truck in service by the end of September.
