A Newport News man was put to death Thursday night for the murder of his 79-year-old neighbor. Kent Jackson died by lethal injection at 9:18.
Jackson and a friend beat, stabbed, and sexually assaulted Beulah Mae Kaiser, in 2000. Her cane was crammed into her mouth with such force that it knocked out most of her teeth and broke her jaw. The friend is serving a 135-year sentence.
Jackson's last words were as follows: "You all can't kill me. I'm the king. Remember me like you remember Jesus. I'll be back.” Jackson and another 26-year-old inmate were the youngest of the 17 on Virginia's death row.
Jackson's execution comes on a day when the US Court of Appeals ruled Virginia's method of execution is constitutional. In a two-to-one decision this afternoon, the panel rejected a claim that Virginia's lethal injection method presents a substantial risk of harm.
Christopher Scott Emmett is scheduled to be executed on July 24th for killing a co-worker in Danville back in 2001.
