The Opening Ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games will kick off a weekend full of athletic competition. Nearly 6,000 athletes traveled to the Roanoke Valley from outside of our area.
The Games mean big business this weekend for the area economy. The Roanoke Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau tells us that last year visitors from the Commonwealth Games spent $2.7-million and tourism officials hope one trip here could lead to a greater payoff.
Dave Kjolhede, Roanoke Valley Conv. & Visitors Bureau - "Events like the Commonwealth Games give us exposure, it brings people in and they may come in thinking they are going to be here for one reason and then they find out that they really enjoy it and its really a pretty cool place to come and then they come back."
The Visitors Bureau ranks the Commonwealth Games as the largest sporting event in the area this year.
