Athletes from across the state are gathered in the Roanoke Valley. It's the marquis weekend for the 19th-annual Coventry Commonwealth Games. ABC 13’s Dennis Carter, along with Frances Scott, were two of the hosts for Friday night's Opening Ceremonies.
The night is always fun for the athletes and spectators. Thousands of athletes, sporting their team banners, proudly march in to the cheers of the crowd. Jeff Bateman and the XYZ Kickers put on an action-filled karate demonstration. And how about this BMX Show, these guys doing incredible stunts on two wheels and wowing the crowd!
Survivor: Africa winner Ethan Zohn delivered some motivational words for the athletes. And of course, capping the night, the lighting of the cauldron. Let the Games Begin!
Austin Beecher, Roanoke Rampage Basketball - "It'll help us all around with our game. I mean it'll get us to harder teams, will help you."
Dennis - "Are you fast?"
Justin Taylor, Track Athlete - "Yes.
Dennis - "Are you going to show 'em tomorrow?"
Justin - "Yes, first place. No problem, I guarantee it."
Dennis - "What was your favorite part?"
Ruchelle Thornsbury - "Ethan."
Dennis - "He's pretty cute, isn't he?"
Ruchelle - "Yea."
We'll have highlights from many sports Saturday night at 6:00.
