More than half of this year's record 58 sports are being contested this weekend in the Coventry Commonwealth Games. Plenty of sports to go around, Sports Director Dennis Carter caught up with lots of the action Saturday in the Roanoke Valley. 5K runners got an early start in Roanoke Saturday morning and beat the heat. Dave Baxter of Roanoke, who finished second last year, pulled away and won easily, Roanoke's Allie Uhl the top lady in her first Games.

Dave Baxter, 5K Winner (Roanoke)- "It was about where I wanted to be time-wise and it was a really fast course. A little humid but not too bad, good day to race."

Allie Uhl, Wins Gold in First Games - "I got a little faster as the race went on, so I'll take that than getting slower and slower and slower."

Nearly 70 players took to the fields for co-ed volleyball. Parent and child games are a fun new addition, another 100 competitors expected tomorrow for men's and women's doubles. Nice time to take the plunge when the temperatures climb. Roanoke Times sportswriter Doug Doughty swam five events. And how about Mary Hollyday of Midlothian, still going strong at 84.

Mary Hollyday, 84-year-old Swimmer - "It's fun, it's healthy. And as one old lady said when asked why she did swimming as far as sports, she said it's the only sport I know where you can fall down and not get hurt."

Karate is still a big draw, 11-year-old Jessica Sanfilippo of Richmond won the gold in her first two events. Softball has attracted nearly 13-hundred players this year in the Games, second only to basketball at more than 17-hundred.

On the diamond, the Mustangs of New River Valley scored late to take a one-run lead. But Southern Heat of Madison Heights rallied to tie its last at-bat to salvage a 4-all tie. And about 65 boys and girls kicked off two full days of junior tennis, Commonwealth Games' gold medals the big prize on Sunday.

Brandon Altieri, Hidden Valley Rising Senior - "It's one of my favorite tournaments to play in because I know all the people that I've played every year, so."

We'll bring you more sports from the Games Sunday.
