Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama (web|news|bio) is making a major push to win Virginia in November. Saturday the campaign opened 20 field offices around the Commonwealth. A crowd gathered to open this office in downtown Lynchburg Saturday morning.
Local party leader John Lawrence says it's the first time a democratic presidential candidate has had an official campaign office here since Lyndon Johnson. He says the effort will pay off.
John Lawrence, Lynchburg Democrats - "Because this is an area that can go Obama. He's reaching out to people. We have a lot of disaffected voters in this region."
The Obama camapign also has offices in Blacksburg, Danville, Martinsville and Roanoke.
And Republican candidate John McCain (web|news|bio) currently has six offices in Virginia. The one in Roanoke will open on Monday. A campaign spokesperson says they plan to open more in the commonwealth as the election gets closer.
