One sport gaining steam in the Coventry Commonwealth Games of Virginia is mountain biking. Roanoke hosted both an individual time trial Saturday and cross county event Sunday with both events attracting more than 50 participants.
In the time trial, bikers start at the bottom of Mill Mountain and ride through an alley-way, then cross the main road onto some wooded trails before finishing up just below the base of the Mill Mountain Star.
Bob Bowman, Roanoke Cycling - "More people are going to get interested in mountain biking. You know with the price of gas the way it is these days, a lot of people are going to be looking for alternate means of either transportation or recreation. And a bicycle's a great one."
Also in the Games this weekend, the 16-and-under Campbell County Wildcats AAU basketball team captured the gold medal, beating Richmond Metro in the title game. The 15-and-under Wildcats team won the bronze.
And Amelon Middle School's Jacob Swinton earned the silver medal in the 200 and 400-meter runs.
