It's World Series time in Lynchburg! The Hill City is hosting the National Amateur Baseball Federation World Series through this Sunday.
More than 30 teams of 17-and-under players from across the U.S. and Canada have converged on Lynchburg. Former big league pitcher Jim Bibby spoke to the athletes in Wednesday night's Opening Ceremonies. Play begins Thursday morning on nine different fields, we're talking baseball all the time, some 70 games will be played the next two days alone. Lynchburg Mayor Joan Foster threw out the first pitch.
Jim Bibby, Former Major League Pitcher - "Everybody in Lynchburg, I know I will, I'll be out here to see 'em play. I'll come to the stadium here, but I think if you can get out to see these guys play, it'll be good for the city and good for the team, too."
Joan Foster, Lynchburg Mayor - "We have this wonderful entertainment going on. They are here in our hotels and they're, you know, enjoying our city, and I have guaranteed them some real southern hospitality."
And the players and coaches, they're pretty pumped, anxious to play and happy to be in Central Virginia.
Justin Hocker, Ohio Extreme - "It's good to get up here, all the mountains. It's beautiful up here, nice scene away from the small town, so this is nice."
Charles Myers, Stembridge River Bats (Baltimore) - "This is the World Series, everybody should be excited because not many people, this is a kid's dream right here."
Jeff Bates, LCA Bulldogs - "Ah, we've got pretty good pitching and our hitting is really good, so that's pretty good. And our fielding is excellent."
Chris Turco, Marietta, GA Coach - "The last two months, we've played about 42 games, so this will be our 43rd game tomorrow. So we play pretty much every day."
