A Bassett truck stop will soon be the only place in the country where biodiesel is manufactured and sold at gas pumps. Red Birch Energy, a North Carolina company, opened up its first venture in Henry County.
It uses local canola seed to make its biodiesel. Soon, diesel-running trucks will be able to fill up with the fuel, without having to make any changes to their engines. The owner of Red Birch says biodiesel is about 50 cents cheaper than regular diesel right now. But that's not the only benefit.
Dean Price, Owner of Red Birch Gas - "We can grow this here, give the farmer another source of income and relieve our dependence on foreign oil."
Canola seed can also be grown in the winter, so it doesn't replace other crops. Plus, biodiesel is cleaner with lower emissions than you get with regular diesel.
