A public hearing in Campbell County Monday promises to be a big draw and perhaps contentious. On the agenda for county planners is a rezoning and special use request for a proposed rock quarry in the Evington area. Many neighbors are fighting the project. The signs of opposition are all over Evington.
David Keesee, Evington Resident - "There are so many problems that go with a quarry."
Boxley Materials says it wants to work with neighbors and has studied their concerns.
Jack McCarthy, Boxley Materials - "Noise, traffic, dust, view, to try to answer their questions and we had an open house in March."
But many are not convinced. And they're organizing a show of force at the Planning Commission meeting.
Keesee - "We are hoping to see at least a couple hundred people at the meeting."
Boxley says it needs the new site because this one on Lawyers Road has almost run its course.
McCarthy - "Lawyers road has about 15 years left."
Residents say Boxley is worried about its bottom line while they're worried about their neighborhood and property values.
Keesee - "Boxley is a good company but we have been to other Boxley rock quarries and we have talked to neighbors there and they have problems."
McCarthy - "I don't want to tell people how to feel but I would not worry about it. Knowing what I know, I would not worry about it."
But that doesn't change much for the neighbors set in stone against it. The Campbell County Planning Commission meeting is Monday night at 7:00. It's in the Haberer Building in Rustburg. The matter will later go before County supervisors.
