Montgomery Co., VA -
A former Virginia Tech football player is charged with assault, but his family says it wasn't his fault. 22-year-old Jahre Cheeseman is accused of assaulting a Virginia Tech employee near campus on Wednesday, then stealing something from him.
Cheeseman was just released on bond from the Western Virginia Regional Jail in Roanoke County. Cheeseman's family says a medical condition is to blame. They say Cheeseman's viral meningitis has caused him to act strangely and outlandishly in the past. And they say he needs medical attention.
His half-brother says it's not like Cheeseman to assault someone and end up in jail. He says Jahre was receiving shots to control his illness but says he was overdue for another one.
His family is rushing here from across the country, to make sure he's okay. Jahre's Half-Brother, Jahkeim Cromedy, said, "It's been almost day and they haven't gotten him the medical care that he needs. It can't be taken care of at just one of the local jails, it needs to be at a hospital."
Jail Deputy-Superintendent, Bobby Russell, said, “We did not have any major issues with Mr. Cheeseman. He was in the facility, we handled him as we would any other inmate, and provided him the care that he needed while he was here."
Jail officials say Cheeseman intended to seek medical attention after his release. They say if Cheeseman's life was in danger, he would've received help.
He's due in court next month on those charges. We'll let you know what happens.
