Appomattox Co., VA - It took a police officer's uniform to help an Appomattox man return safely to his family on Thursday. 77-year-old George Morris worked for State Police for about 40 years.
His family reported him missing on Wednesday after he left home and didn't return. Morris has Alzheimer's and requires daily medication.
After police issued a senior alert they got a tip from the Bent Creek area. On Wednesday morning, an officer in plainclothes found him at a convenience store.
His family went there too but Morris didn't recognize them. He wouldn't respond until a trooper in uniform came to the scene.
"Him being the retired captain of the third division, he connected with the uniform. And the troopers here know him. He's well known in the community, very well respected in our department, a lot of concern went out," Lt. Ann Barber with Virginia State Police

We're told Morris was slightly dehydrated, but otherwise in good condition.
