Senseless vandalism at a local church -- solved. Investigators say two teenagers are responsible. Members of St. John Baptist Church in Forest discovered the damage on Saturday, July 19th.
One of the teens charged is already in custody. The other we're told is at his parents' house, waiting to be arrested. Church members are pretty happy to hear this and they are very thankful for the Bedford County Sheriff's office for all their work.
Investigators say they were able to get confessions from both 17-year-olds, who attend Jefferson Forest High School. Officers say the teens said they were just pulling a prank and didn't think about the consequences.
You'll remember, the church's stained glass windows were broken... paint splattered across the piano and hymnals and the numbers 666 were written on the back of the church. Despite the satanic graffiti, investigators believe this was nothing more than a teenage prank.
Investigator Michael Mayhew, Bedford County Sheriff's Office - "That was one thing that was going through our minds, and when I asked them that question, they said, they thought it would be a fun thing to do."
Deacon Clarence Brown, St. John Baptist Church - "Certainly our prayers have been with them and certainly they are individuals who need help and we just pray much for them and their families."
Investigators don't believe the teens had anything to do with the vandalism that occurred at a Campbell County business that same weekend. Both teens have been charged with felony property damage. No word on if prosecutors plan to try them as adults.
