Watch your cars and what's inside. You've heard it before, but now, those vehicle break-ins are happening in broad daylight in the middle of crowded parking lots.

Luckily, Lynchburg Police (web) say one crook's crime was caught on tape on Langhorne Road at Hurt & Proffitt where it happened six days ago. (Click the video link to see the surveillance video.)

The vehicle was parked in the parking lot of Hurt and Proffitt. The thief never even knew he was standing just feet from this surveillance camera. It was a bold daylight burglary, taking place last Thursday around 1:00 in the afternoon.

Lt. Jeff Bauserman, Lynchburg Investigator - "Typically, people operate under the cover of darkness or in the late evening hours as to conceal there identity. This one happened in broad daylight."

And the driver had just gone inside. In just minutes, the thief saw an opportunity, crawling inside the pick-up truck. He left with a cell phone and cash.

Gerald Cox, Hurt & Proffitt - "I guess it could only be better if he would have posed for it because you know, he's fully on camera, face and all."

Hurt and Proffitt recently installed the cameras after several other car larcenies. This time, they think they'll catch the thief.

Cox - "Because of the security cameras definitely because we would have had no indication of who it was or what exactly happened otherwise."

Lt. Bauserman - "We're hoping to make an ID off this video quite frankly and hopefully tonight that will happen."

Police say they just need to know the man's name and you can help them by calling Crime Stoppers (web) at 888-798-5900. Your tip could get you a reward of up to a-thousand dollars. We'll keep you updated on their investigation.
