The Falwell family is disappointed in a New York Daily News report. An article published Wednesday claims the late Jerry Falwell died poor and lost $20-million in a failed real estate investment.
Falwell's family says this claim is completely false. They say there's no truth to it at all. Jerry Jr. says his father never invested in real estate developments of any kind. The article cites a book, Falwell Inc., as the source of its information.
The article says the late-Falwell lost money in the failed Liberty Village project on Candler's Mountain. Jerry Falwell Sr. had an agreement with the developer to help market Liberty Village. Falwell never saw a penny of that money because the New York developer went under. Jerry Falwell Jr. says the journalist never contacted anyone from the Falwell family before publishing the article.
Jerry Falwell Jr., Chancellor of Liberty University (web) - “I just think it’s irresponsible. Like I told her, I think it's sleazy. And, I'm sorry to see it happen especially when it involves somebody who is deceased. It’s just reprehensible."
The article also says that the development site is used as a police training ground. Falwell Jr. says that's false too. Liberty University houses graduate and married students on the property.
