Pittsylvania County has one of the highest traffic fatality rates in the state. So if you got a ticket there last week officers want you to keep that in mind. Off-duty officers wrote 153 tickets between July 26th through August 3rd, part of the county's Highway Safety Blitz Program.
Two were DUI's, five were child safety seat violations, 25 were for not wearing a seatbelt and the rest were for speeding or other violations.
Sheriff Mike Taylor, Pittsylvania County - "This is not a punitive thing for the public, by no means. But it's to make people think when they drive on the highways and to keep them safe."
A federal grant funded the program. Based on the number of young violators, the Sheriff's Office will start at the local high schools this fall on safe driving.
