Investigators are waiting to speak to a child's family before giving any more information about a rescue in Smith Mountain Lake Thursday afternoon. Conservation Police say around 2:30 the child was swimming at the State Park's public beach, went underwater and never came up.
An adult nearby noticed and told lifeguards. They and officers evacuated the beach and started searching. They found the child and performed CPR, while waiting for an ambulance. They took the child to Bedford County Hospital. We have no update on a condition.
Officer Andy Davis, Smith Mountain Lake State Park - "The staff did a great job responding and the lifeguards did a good job in their efforts. But it's very unfortunate."
It's unknown whether the child was swimming alone. The beach will open back up Friday.
