One big issue at Wednesday night's Lynchburg rally -- parking. Originally, the Obama campaign said people could park at the nearby Plaza. It seems the Obama campaign didn't check with Liberty University (web) first and they own the Plaza here.
LU police are here right now, making sure that only Plaza shoppers are using this space, the entrances are blocked off. The whole thing has some asking if it's about parking or political differences. Park your car at City stadium and catch the bus to E.C. Glass. The city says it's their solution to the Obama campaign's mistake.
JoAnn Martin, City of Lynchburg - "I think it was just a miscommunication I believe they thought it was public parking and they thought it would be okay to refer people to The Plaza."
But The Plaza is owned by Liberty University and officials there say they knew nothing of any parking plans.
Jerry Falwell Jr., Chancellor LU - "I was watching TV news last night and that was the first time I heard about parking at The Plaza."
Falwell says Liberty can't help out because they're a tax-exempt organization and the IRS says they can't help a campaign in any way.
Falwell - "For example when one of our presidential candidates spoke here recently he used our plane and immediately paid us the full value of that flight even though he was speaking at Liberty."
So entrances to the plaza have become a traffic stop with LU police checking who's a shopper, and who's headed to Obama. Leaving a bad taste in some people's mouths.
Connie Amos-Parsons, Forest - "I just feel that we should all try to accommodate people in a Christian and spiritual way."
Joe Day, Appomattox - "I take issue with the fact that you deny people the right to park at something that nobody is using."
Falwell says they're willing to allow the Obama campaign to lease space. And they'd do the same for John McCain (web|news|bio) .
Falwell - "It's true we'd be a little more tempted to help on the other side, but the law says we can't so we feel like we're being transparent about it."
We have the IRS regulations right here and it does say that an organization like Liberty cannot qualify for tax-exempt status if it participates in, or intervenes on the behalf of any political campaign. So, basically if someone is wearing an Obama shirt, they probably won't be allowed to shop at the Plaza. Jerry Jr. says this could've been avoided, if Obama's campaign had called ahead to rent the parking here.
