For them it's a question of fairness. Some say people at Thomas Road Baptist Church should not be parking at Toys-R-Us across the street. Especially since Liberty University (web) didn't let people going to the Obama event in Lynchburg park at The Plaza.
Some residents say LU and Thomas Road aren't being good neighbors.
Penny Millson-Martula, Says TRBC Being Unfair - "You expect more of a religious institution, you expect more golden rule."
So they wanted to tell people not to park at Toys-R-Us, just like LU police stopped people from parking at The Plaza.
Millson-Martula - "This is private property, you can't park here, this is what you did, it's wrong isn't it."
Churchgoer - "It's very convenient. Other than having to cross the road where all the traffic is."
Reverend Jonathan Falwell says Thomas Road has nothing to do with Liberty's decision about parking at the Plaza. Plus he didn't even know about any problems at the Toys-R-Us lot.
Rev. Jonathan Falwell, Thomas Road Baptist Church - "To my knowledge Toys "R" Us has never come and complained about anything."
Still -- he took action.
Falwell - "I asked our church to be the neighbors we should be, to be good neighbors, and not to park in their parking lot... because it's a business and they have a responsibility to their customers."
A Toys-R-Us manager asked demonstrators to leave. And we're told the store is letting churchgoers park there and discussing an arrangement.
Millson-Martula - "Hopefully both of us will live by the golden rule, both of us will give to Falwell - "We want to do everything we can to be the neighbors that we need to be."
Liberty University and Chancellor Jerry Falwell Junior defend not letting people park at The Plaza for the Obama event. Falwell says they can't give away free parking to any political candidate because it violates LU's tax exempt status. And says he's open to working out something in advance.
