Budget Cut Hitting VA Tech Hard
posted 7:07 pm Fri September 07, 2007 - Blacksburg, VA
Virginia Tech has been hit with some major budget cuts just as the university begins to weigh a list of recommendations by the Governor's review panel. Governor Kaine ordered Virginia Tech to reduce its budget by 7 and a half percent. That equals about $15-million the university will have to return to the state. All state agencies will feel some effects from the cuts due to a budget shortfall of $640 million.
Tech is already in a budget crunch having spent $8-million after the April 16th shootings. That money was spent on things such as lodging for victim's families, renovations to Norris Hall, and new locks added to many classroom doors.
The university does not know where that money will come from.
Larry Hincker, University Spokesman - "Sprinkling across the university, what we call an across the board levy, is not what we're going to do. Yes you can do that but then what you do is you impinge every program in the university."
The university plans to submit a broad proposal to the state on Monday that will include how Virginia Tech might absorb the budget cuts.
