Police vs. Sheriffs Softball Game
posted 7:07 pm Fri September 07, 2007 - Danville, VA
They're trading badges and boots, for bats and cleats. The Danville Police Department and Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office will go head-to-head on the softball field Saturday. They'll play three back-to-back games with money raised going to charity.
The county came out on top last year. Do they still have what it takes, or will the city step up to the plate?
Major Gary Goodson, Sheriff's Office - "Our team is red hot and smoking."
And even though it's only the second year of the face-off.
Goodson - "Right now we are undefeated."
Lt. Mike Mondul, Danville Police - "They're defending a title, sometimes that's harder than trying to win it."
But for both teams, it's making it through nine innings that's tough.
Goodson - "It's fun sometimes to watch our guys run."
Mondul - "Chasing bad guys through back yards is a whole lot different than sliding into bases out here."
They're usually running after robbers, but here, they are the ones stealing- bases that is.
Mondul - "We did some trash talking last year and it kind of hit us in the face."
But Danville police officers say the banter is back. This year rumor has it one-side is stacking their line-up.
Goodson - "On our application, we've got a little box that says, if you play softball, what's your RBI and so forth, and that makes a big determination on whether we hire somebody."
So he's just joking around, but don't be fooled, this competition is no laughing matter.
Mondul - "We want to try to take Gracie's Cup back, and put it where it belongs in the city."
Goodson - "We don't really see why we should bother bringing the trophy down here, because we're just going to keep it."
State Attorney General Bob McDonnell will be there to throw the first pitch. The first game starts at noon Saturday at Dan Daniel Park.
