A Danville house stinks and neighbors are tired of holding their noses. In June, the humane society removed 19 cats from the home. The animals had lived there in their own filth for four years.

But with the cats gone, the place still smells up the whole street. If you just stand at the mailbox of 204 Vicar Road, you'll get a whiff.

Bobby Thompson, Lives Near Smelly House - "It's really bad."

A rotten smelling stench that neighbors can't escape.

Thompson - "A lot of times I can't even stand in my own front yard."

Annie Hudson, Lives Near Smelly House - "There were times where we couldn't sit on our porch for 15 minutes before we'd have to go inside."

Bobby Thompson and Annie Hudson thought the air would clear a couple of months ago after the cats found a new home at the animal shelter and the city got involved with cleaning up the property. But not only did the grass rarely get mowed, the smell, stayed.

Hudson - "We don't feel like our property's worth anything with that house in the condition that it's in."

City officials say they've made progress, but slowly. First, they had to track down the homeowner.

Jerry Rigney, City Inspections - "It took awhile to find out where she went, when she left the house, nobody really knew where she went, and that's hard for me to find out."

Eventually, the city made contact. The homeowner hired someone to clean-up the house, starting on the outside and working their way in.

Rigney - "It takes time to do a cleaning and a large project like this and trying to salvage some things too."

Thompson and Hudson understand that, but they're just hoping they won't have to go another four years living next to a litter box.

Thompson - "I hope the city continues to check on it, and make sure they're doing it right."

We spoke with the owner of the home Monday. She did not want to make any comment. City officials say the furniture and carpet will be removed from the home by the end of the month. The homeowner cannot own a pet in the city for two years.
