A permanent memorial for a soldier who died serving his country in Iraq (web|news) . His church, West Lynchburg Baptist, is seeking city permission to build a playground in his memory. They say it's a very fitting tribute to Private First Class Jason Scheuerman.
There was something special about Jason Scheuerman. His dad told us about it shortly after his son died back in 2005.
Chris Scheuerman, Jason's Dad - He had a bond with children that was very special. He would come into a room and little kids would just gravitate."
Now family and friends say he will continue making an impact on young lives though, what they call, JJ's Playground.
Kim Shumaker, Church Trustee - "Whenever kids were involved in something, he was in the middle."
But depression crippled him and he took his life. His mom told us about an e-mail he sent her.
Anne Scheuerman, Jason's Mom - "It just said, ' sorry I can't deal with this anymore' and said goodbye in the email."
Shumaker - "He was extremely outgoing."
And very involved at West Lynchburg Baptist. Now even area residents are thrilled to be honoring his memory.
Tom Woodford, Church Member - "How could you not be supportive when you look at the playground, what it means."
Jason's parents and church members are chipping in to build the playground in land near the church.
Woodford - "A real modern type of playground. They are all over the city parks. We are going to put in a good one."
Something that is lasting and special. The planning commission already gave the park unanimous approval.
City council members will consider the issue on October 14, and if all goes according to plan, the park should be complete sometime around Thanksgiving.
