Amherst Co., VA - Students at Sweet Briar (web) College were challenged to create their own boats out of cardboard.

The Sixth Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta was held Thursday.

The four teams got 20 pounds of cardboard and 50 feet of duct tape to make boats and paddles. The rest is up to how creative they can be.

The goal is for each team to navigate through the course the fastest, and stay afloat the longest.

Dean Jonathan Green says students got more out of the course than just boat building.  "To get an understanding of how things are designed, how the design process works and also a critical component is how they work in teams and solve problems together."

The race which is normally held on weekends was moved to Thursday to accommodate Saturday's Inauguration of incoming President Jo Ellen Johnson Parker.
