Lynchburg, VA -
Zoning for a new playground to honor a local soldier has passed the Lynchburg Planning Commission without opposition. If it clears its final hurdle with city council, it could be up and running by December.
The park, honoring Private Jason Scheuerman, would go on a plot of land off Langhorne Lane next to the West Lynchburg Baptist Church.
Tom Woodford, West Lynchburg Baptist Church - "We looked at several different locations here around the church. And, finally, decided that really the best spot was across the street. We had some property over there, and it was level, and we could do something really nice in his memory."
Scheuerman's parents teamed up with the church for the project. They say Jason loved working with the children there, and this would be the perfect way to honor him.
Also on the agenda -- possible GLTC service from Cabell Street to the Plaza. People in the Daniel's Hill District were cut off when the D-Street Bridge shut down, and they've been asking to get it back.
Normally, route changes and additions are handled administratively, but this proposal would require some money from the GLTC's surplus fund. Director Mike Carroll says the company can do it without council's approval, but he'd like to get their blessing.
And the Lynchburg Police (web) Department is looking to buy new tasers. Several months ago LPD applied for a federal grant to help with officer recruitment but did not meet all of the standards.
LPD then found that buying more law enforcement equipment, like tasers, would put them back in the running. They'll ask council for about 16-thousand dollars to put toward 19 new tasers.
