Appomattox Co., VA -
In Appomattox County, they're shocked at the political signs in the area vandalized with hate. As we reported over the weekend, someone spray painted the N-word and the letters KKK on signs along Route 26 last week.
Police are investigating and area leaders are taking this very seriously. Whoever it was painted the N-word on a large Barack Obama (web|news|bio) sign. And similar things have happened in communities around the nation. People just didn't expect it to happen here. Folks here say it's simply unacceptable.
Arylece Cousins, Saw Signs - "We are supposed to be beyond this point. That's why, when these things happen, it takes us a step back."
Arkita Carter, Saw Signs - "I have never seen anything like that before and I don't like seeing it."
A group of area preachers even drafted a statement declaring the vandalism "abhorrent." They say it doesn't reflect Appomattox County values. The folks who put up the signs took away the smaller signs with the KKK on them. But the larger Obama sign with the n-word on it -- gone. Still, the signs stayed up long enough for so many to see.
Mark Catlett, Area Resident - "If they painted over them or something, that would have been something else. But it looked like it was more hate or prejudice to do that."
Something many kids aren't used to and can't understand. So when the issue came up -- Arylece Cousins addressed it head on at church.
Cousins - "I was given the opportunity in my children's ministry to express to them that people are going to call us all kinds of things. And we are given a name at birth and that's what we answer to."
Words that helped soothe a distressed congregation.
Cousins - "One of the ladies touched me on my shoulder told me, 'we needed that. We needed that both as children and adults.'"
Meanwhile, they're left wondering about who's behind it all.
Carter - "A very ignorant person, evidently."
Whoever did this faces destruction of property charges. The Appomattox Democratic Party chair tells us state party officials are also looking into this.
