Across the ABC 13 Viewing Area -
A study by voting rights advocates ranks Virginia among the least prepared states to handle Election Day problems, but registrars in our area say that's nonsense. We spoke with election officials and they're pretty angry about this report.
If anything, registrars say they feel Virginia is better prepared than most because being a swing state, they know what to expect. Jenny Sanders works nearly 90 hours a week... and she's okay with that.
Jenny Sanders, Pittsylvania County Registrar - "I don't mind answering legitimate questions and I don't mind answering peoples concerns."
But one thing she does mind -- a recent study conducted by Common Cause and Verified Voting.
Sanders - "It is nonsense, it’s totally unfounded."
The study says Virginia is among the least prepared for Election Day, but registrars in our area say that's just not true.
Sanders - "They didn't do any research they didn't ask anybody any questions."
Peggy Petty, Danville Registrar - "I just really discount the study I just don't feel like it’s reliable."
And they say not only is it unreliable, but its actually creating more problems for them.
Sanders - "It makes our job harder because then we have to answer questions all the time about why we do certain procedures."
And that takes away time from what really matters.
Sanders - "You have to reassure the voter, and that takes time away from the job that we have to do."
Jeremy Epstein, an adviser to the study, says the report was based on 4 things. Contingency plans, accounting for ballots, paper records and post election audits.
Jeremy Epstein - "In terms of the fourth of those, post election audits, Virginia is perhaps the worst state in the country, we have the most restrictive audit and recount laws, its basically impossible."
Jenny disagrees and has a few words for the writers of this study.
Sanders - "I am so angry with you because you created so much discord in the community."
And for voters.
Sanders - "Trust us, trust the system."
We spoke with registrars from Danville, Pittsylvania County, Lynchburg and Roanoke and all tell me they strongly disagree with this study. They say they will be prepared come election day.
