Chatham, VA - It's a cancer marked by a pink ribbon, that claims tens of thousands of women's lives each year, but women aren't breast cancer's only victims.
One local postman, knows that reality all too well. People say Dexter Adams turns a mundane trip to the post office, into the best part of your day.
"His friendly smile and his way, he just makes the post office!"
No doubt, 28 years of experience helps. So does perspective about what's important. In May, Dexter Adams' health took a serious turn.
"I just felt this lump in my chest so I went to Chatham family medical center," Adams said.
A mammogram and sonogram later, Adams got the most unexpected news.
"It came back cancer and it shocked me. I thought I had a cyst. I had no idea that I would have cancer!"
Not just cancer, but breast cancer.
Diane Doherty is the nurse who found Adams Cancer said, "In my 30 plus years of practice I've never had a positive as far as a male is concerned."
So this man, known about town for making others' days bright. Counted on the same neighbors to get him through dark times.
"Everybody is very support. Here in Chatham we're like a big family," Adams said.
Many of them women, breast cancer survivors, who knew his battle well.
"A lot of them have taken me under their wing to wish me well and tell me they've had the same problem."
Dexter says he shared his story because he wants other men to be aware that breast cancer doesn't just strike women. And he says saving just one life, will make his story worth it.
