Altavista, VA - An Altavista woman is homeless after her apartment caught fire Monday afternoon.
Fire and EMS responded to 1205 Amherst Avenue around 2:30 Monday to the sight of smoke pouring out of one of the apartments. Crews evacuated the entire building as a precaution.
As you can see from the photos below, fire fighters made a hole in the ceiling to prevent the fire and smoke from spreading to the connecting apartments.
EMS crews say a woman and a fire fighter were treated on the scene.
There is no word yet on the official cause of the blaze, but Altavista's deputy chief says it was a kitchen fire.
Fire crews controlled the blaze to the one apartment. However, that apartment is a total loss. The woman is staying with family for the time-being.
Crews from Altavista, Hurt, and Evington responded.
