Volunteers Help WWII Veteran

Help for homeowners who can't help themselves is on the way and getting stronger in the Lynchburg area. And this month the local chapter of "Rebuilding Together" is helping to create a safer home for a Lynchburg man who helped keep the United States safe during World War II.
Benjamin Cofer, Homeowner - "They're hard workers. It's a hard bunch of workers."
Former Army Sergeant Benjamin Cofer knows a little about hard work himself. You can't fight a war in the army and go onto serve the marines, without learning that lesson. Now the battle ground is his front yard and as he sits on his porch to survey the land, he's confident these civilians are up to the challenge.
Cofer - "I don't see no lazy ones out of the bunch."
Sandy Walton, Rebuilding Together - "You find that people in the community are very much willing to jump on board and do what we can."
These volunteers will help this wheelchair bound soldier defeat these stairs by building an elevator like this one he can use instead.
Jessica Berry, LC Student Volunteer - "I hope that it makes him happy and that he can get out and do the things he has too."
It will take some time and some major volunteer power but…
Walton - "This is their home. This is their memories, their stories, this is where they want to be."
Cofer - "Couldn't believe it because I had tried everything.”
Emotion overcomes Cofer now, the day his life comes full circle, the day his troops help to protect him. The work Rebuilding together is doing on Mr. Cofer's home is provided by a $13,000 "Heroes At Home" grant from Sears. The organization serves mostly disabled people with lower incomes, so far they've helped repair more than 60 homes in Lynchburg this year.
