Across the 5th District -
Over the past 48 hours, the vote count for the 5th District Congressional seat has been a roller coaster ride. As election officials continue counting, the most recent numbers show Democrat Tom Perriello leading Republican Virgil Goode (web) by 648 votes.
The Democratic Party of Virginia is congratulating Perriello on his unofficial victory over Goode. We talked to Tom Perriello. His campaign is confident they've won this election, but they know votes are still being counted. Still, after coming from more than 30-points down in the polls, this underdog campaign says they have reason to celebrate.
Tom Perriello, (D) 5th District Candidate "Hey!"
The past few days have been a whirlwind for 5th District candidate Tom Perriello. As precincts continue to canvas votes, he's canvassing his campaign offices. Shaking hands, thanking workers in Farmville for a job well done.
Perriello - "It looks like we're going to be ahead by several hundred. It looks like we're going to Washington."
That's why the Democratic Party of Virginia is congratulating Perriello on what seems to be an impending victory. Perriello is cautiously optimistic.
Perriello - "I said look, we want to make sure that every valid vote is counted here and we got a few more to come in."
Campaign worker Andrew Rogers has watched the vote count shift. He checked the State Board of Elections website as soon as he woke up.
Andrew Rogers, Perriello Campaign - "We've been down 146 votes, up six votes, up 31, down, up, up down. This is really fun watching the numbers."
Perriello - "People feel like the productivity of Perriello supporters at work is very low from hitting the refresh button."
Some supporters have become obsessed with the shifting results.
Trent Armitage, Perriello Campaign Intern - "I've been hitting the refresh page on the State Board of Elections Site about every five minutes, expecting something to change. I haven't slept in days I think."
Perriello hasn't had much shut-eye either. But at least he feels comfortable.
Perriello - "Once again we're comfortably on top. Not so comfortable, but you know, 600 plus and it looks like we're going to win this thing."
We contacted the Goode campaign to hear what they had to say about the Dem's announcement. Here's the statement Virgil Goode emailed to ABC 13 News. "Any declarations of winners and losers in this race is premature. This contest is undeniably close, the vote totals have greatly varied back and forth since election night and the official counting process is still ongoing. It is important that we take the time for a fair and thorough process to ensure that every legitimate vote is counted. We remain optimistic that we will prevail when this process is completed."
We'll continue to follow this race.
