Lexington,VA -
Christmas came a little early for Liberty Saturday. The Flames beat VMI to clinch at least a tie for the conference championship. Then Coastal Carolina beat Gardner Webb, giving LU their second straight outright Big South title.
They earned it against the Keydets...up 7-3, Brock Smith finds Corey Rasberry open for the catch and score. Smith's second TD pass makes it 14-3 Flames.
Now in the 2nd quarter...take a look at Rashad Jennings. This is why he was the preseason conference player of the year - blowing right through guys on his way to a 32 yard touchdown run. 21-3 LU.
It was 21-12 at the half and now 31-19 here in the 4th quarter. VMI used the play action perfectly fooling us as well as the LU defense. Chaz Jones in for the touchdown. It's 31-26.
But Liberty came right back to put it away. Jennings became the Big South's all time leading rusher today going over 100 yards for the 10th straight time.
This 36-yard score pushed LU to 8-and-2 on the year...38-26 the final.
Danny Rocco, LU Coach - "We had a Big South Championship on the line. We came out here today and secured at least a share of that so back to back championships for our program so that's always something to be excited about."
Sparky Woods, VMI Coach - "We knew we would have to play our very best to have a chance to be in it with them. We played good at times; we did. We played hard but we didn't play very well. You can't fumble the snaps and have as many penalties as we had and we gave up some big plays."
Rashad Jennings, LU RB - "That's special for this program. That goes to the strength coach. That goes to the offensive linemen, offensive coordinator, defense getting us in good positions. That's just a team effort right there."
