Across the 5th District -
The numbers have changed again in the race for 5th District! And all the ups and downs are now coming from Pittsylvania County. This race between Congressman Virgil Goode (web) and Tom Perriello seems to get a new twist every day.
We're going to finish this day close where we were on Friday. Monday morning Pittsylvania County changed totals for both men at one precinct. Virgil Goode went from 1639 to 2354. Tom Perriello went from 1497 to 1874. Both because of a "data entry error in central office." Officials say that means something was entered wrong in Richmond. That pulled the race to within 407 votes.
But just a few hours later at the same precinct, Goode's total slid to 1648 -- Perriello's to 1506. This time, the reason listed was "Electoral Board inadvertently overlooked email ballots in Central Absentee Precinct." We're told that happened at the registrar's office in Chatham.
We asked how the numbers got smaller, when ballots were counted after being overlooked. Officials in Richmond could not answer that question. Pittsylvania County Registrar Jenny Sanders tells us it was "human error." Goode and Perriello ended the day gaining 9 votes each. Perriello still leads right now by 745.
There's a good chance the numbers will keep changing, since registrars are still going over their votes. The State Board of Elections will not make the totals official until November 24th.
