Charlottesville, VA -
VMI has already taken down one storied program this season. They beat Kentucky Friday. Sunday they went after another in Charlottesville -- the Keydets took on UVa.
Down by as many as 17, VMI cut it to six at the break. Second half, Travis Holmes dunks it home. He had 20 points. His twin brother Chaves led all scorers with 31. This three made it a three-point game. UVa had an answer though, Jeff Jones feeds Jamal Tucker. He slams it home. Cavs back on top by eight.
Mike Scott tore it up for UVa. He had a career-high 26 points AND a career-high 18 rebounds. He and Sylvan Landesberg combined for half of UVa's points. Landesberg, in his college debut, almost had a triple-double. He had 28 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists. That basket made it 94-87. They controlled from there on in.
In their season opener, UVa wins its 24th straight over VMI -- 107-97 the final.
Dave Leitao, UVa Coach - "Obviously we played well enough for long enough stretches. Got out of the gate early which I thought was important and based on watching them on Friday, that we get off to a good start and we did that. We got a lead and maintained it through all of their comebacks."
Duggar Baucom, VMI Coach - "The happiest thing I am about this whole thing is that my guys are upset that they didn't win the game today and I'm not sure that's always been the mindset at VMI and that's something we've tried to build for three years and they're very, very disappointed because they think they let one get away."
