Lynchburg, VA -
Many of us spent election night in front of the TV watching the results come in. Ever wonder what was going on behind-the-scenes of the political campaigns? CNN political correspondent Candy Crowley was there and will spoke at Randolph College (web) Tuesday night about her experience.
Crowley graduated from Randolph Macon Woman's College in 1970. We sat down with her Tuesday.
The victory speech. Thousands cheering. It's what you saw Election Night. But CNN's Candy Crowley got a different view of the crowd.
Candy Crowley, CNN Political Correspondent - "It was the older African Americans who just sat there just absolutely mute when he came out, and some of them just starting to cry... but so quiet because it was just such a. moment."
Crowley spent most of her time with Barack Obama (web|news|bio) during the campaign season. Instead of the public speaker we knew... she describes him as a little reserved.
Crowley - "Just from people he doesn't know as well there is a definite caution there, that you wouldn't think would be there with someone who can inspire so many people."
On the flip side, she saw John McCain (web|news|bio) as more passionate in person.
Crowley - "He's very intense about enjoying things."
She remembers one particular interview.
Crowley - "Honestly you couldn't get a sentence out of the man because he'd go, "Well I really think we can get that tobacco bill... look at that butterfly. Is that the most... so anyway the tobacco bill should be really great.... oh my gosh, I've never seen the flowers this yellow."
But it's not so much the one-on-one candidate interviews that keep Crowley in the field. It's being an insider in moments like this.
Crowley - "When you know you're covering history. It's a pretty big high."
