Roanoke, VA -
Putting out fires takes some intense training. Future firefighters in the Roanoke Valley know what that entails, they were out all night working their final live burn training exercise. 17 students are wrapping up a 16-week academy.
Instructors say exercises like this lay the foundation for their training that continues even after they start working full time. The recruits have already trained with daytime fires, but fires at night bring different challenges.
Rodney Ferguson, Battalion Chief - "Most of our fires occur at night, different surroundings, it's dark, you can't see everything so you have to use your other senses to help you out."
The recruits will graduate early next month and work at fire stations in Roanoke city, Roanoke County and Salem.
