Danville, VA - The papers are in. 5th District Congressman Virgil Goode (web) filed a petition Tuesday, asking for a recount after the state board of elections certified Tom Perriello as the winner. The next step: both sides will meet for a preliminary hearing within the next ten days.
Luis Abreu, Danville Attorney - "At the preliminary hearing, the parties appear with their counsel and representatives and they're given a preliminary view of the election results, the machines and the ballots that were cast."
Only after the hearing, can the recount begin. Officials will *hand count* the paper ballots. As for touch screen ballots, which is the method used in most of the 5th District, officials will look at the total "tapes" printed out at the end of the night. For optical scan machines, officials will re-run the ballots through the machine.
The entire process could take up to a month.

I can hardly stop laughing long enough to type this. Who is Dan Daniels? Tom Periello was certified the winner over Virgil Goode. I am against all recounts at the taxpayers' expense. If Virgil or any other politician wants a recount they should have to pay for it upfront. I don't care how close the vote was or what party affiliation they have. With today's technology it is a crying shame that we have to play these silly games and tie up the courts time and the taxpayers monies for recounts. Be a man Virgil, accept defeat and take your shot next election.
