At a luncheon Wednesday promoting the relationship between the armed forces and the American Red Cross, Lt. Colonel Scott Smith told ABC 13 News that his battalion has been notified a call up is possible as early as January.
Smith, Commanding Officer of 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry Regiment based in Lynchburg, said the only thing his unit is waiting for is the actual mobilization orders.
"We've told our families, 'Hey, General Newman called Lt. Col. Smith and he's asking what are capabilities are, so let's start our preparations in the event we receive our "mobe" order in the near future," Smith said.
Smith was in Roanoke raising awareness about the great help his men receive from the Red Cross while deployed overseas.
