Charlottesville, VA - Saturday will mark three weeks since missing Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington was last seen in Charlottesville, but family and friends aren't giving up hope she will be found alive.

On Friday, hundreds of volunteers came out to show their support and possibly find answers to her disappearance.

In the woods, on campus, and everywhere between, volunteers fanned out hoping to find some clue that would bring them closer to Morgan.

Lt. Joe Rader with the Virginia State Police (web) said, "We are still progressing as if Morgan Harrington is still alive, until we see something differently, we have to be optimistic and if she is out there and can hear this, she needs to remain optimistic as well."

Volunteers formed teams of about a dozen, spanning a five mile radius from the area Morgan was last seen. Any clues will be reported to police and investigated.

The success of the search depends on one thing- volunteers. Officials say that's one thing they cannot have enough of.

Bob Smither with the Laura Recovery Center said, "The more volunteers we can get the more ground we can cover and the more likely it is that we'll be able to locate Morgan."

Volunteers who came out were happy to come off the sidelines to take part.

UVA Student Cathryn Giltner said, "I just really wanted to do something."

Morgan's parents expressed gratitude to the couple hundred who came.

Morgan's Mother, Gil Harrington, said, "All the people that have come out, they give us hope again, because there are moments when you do have despair and this has given me more strength to deal with this."

With few clues at hand, the family is hoping something may come of this.

"I want everyone to find her today and we can stop the search and change it into a party... that's what I think," Gil said.

The Laura Recovery Center organized the search. The Texas group was founded by Bob Smither and his wife, after their 12-year-old daughter disappeared. Her remains were found 20 days later. Since then, they've helped other families in national missing persons cases.

If you want to help, go to the 900 Natural Resources Dr. Charlottesville, VA 22903. It starts at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
