Los Angeles, CA - Local support groups for domestic violence are glad that pop star Rihanna is finally speaking about the night Chris Brown assaulted her. She appeared Friday night on ABC's 20/20 with Diane Sawyer.
Rihanna says she needed to talk about the assault, because domestic violence is something that can happen to any one of her younger fans.
The Lynchburg YWCA Domestic Violence Center say most teenagers do not report abuse because, they are afraid or don't realize they are in an abusive relationship. The center says Rihanna's story has made more parents and teenagers seek help.
Linda Ellis-Williams, Director of YWCA Domestic Violence Center said, "It's hard for them to identify themselves as a victim but when they see somebody such as Rihanna step forward it'll give them that motivation to step forward and say hey yea that's happening to me as well."
The U.S. Department of Justice reports that one of every four women will be a victim of domestic abuse.
