Across the ABC13 Viewing Area - Around the country Wednesday, people are honoring our nation's veterans.
In Lynchburg, about 100 people gathered at the Lynchburg Armory to pay tribute to those who have served our country. They were supposed to meet at Monument Terrace, but moved inside because of the rain. American Legion Post 16 put the event together.
They say it's not intended as a political statement. Vietnam veteran Marty Reardon said, "It's not believing or wanting war, it's supporting our people, our men and women that are serving."
At the National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, officials blamed the rainy weather for thinning out the crowd to this morning's event. Still, more than a dozen veterans braved the elements to attend the ceremony. The D-Day Memorial is scheduled to close next month for the winter.
In Appomattox County, a packed crowd attended a Veterans Day ceremony at American Legion Post 104. Liberty University
(web) Professor Dr. Barry Moore spoke to the group. Moore, who is also a retired Marine major, thanked the veterans for their contributions. At the end of the ceremony, the group took a moment to recognize the victims in the Fort Hood shootings.
