Lexington, VA -
Virginia Military Institute is under fire by the federal Department of Education for alleged sexism towards female cadets. The Civil Rights office has an ongoing investigation into sexual discrimination claims against the school. The complaint deals with possible derogatory language used in the barracks, the school's promotion policies, and the rule that a cadet must drop out of the school if he or she marries or has a child. Of the 1,500 cadets on campus this Fall, only 126 are women. VMI supporters say the school has worked hard to recruit women since the school went co-ed in 1997.
