Amherst Co., VA - Two households are living in fear after home invasions in separate parts of Amherst County.  One of the victims, who lives in a townhome in Madison Heights, says three black men entered her Seminole Drive home early Monday morning. She says a gunman with a scar on his left cheek pointed a shotgun at her and stole a large amount of cash.

And a Monroe home is still shaken after a late-night home invasion last Thursday. The sheriff's office says two white males entered the house on Brooks Street and hit a woman several times before taking her purse and leaving.

Homeowners need to put in another layer of security between them and home invaders. Here is a suggestion: Home Depot or Lowes has the bars that go under your door knob. They are adjustable to fit any door. They are made for this. Make sure you install them correctly. One end under the door knob and the floor end 12 inches from the door and jam it in with your foot. Easily removed in case of fire. One for each exit door. A 2 X 4 will work too, just cut a notch for the knob and put rubber on the floor end. This may not ultimately stop a determined intruder but it will sure give you time and notice to cock the gun.
