Christiansburg, VA - On a day when most of us are shopping or recovering from our Thanksgiving dinner, fraternity members from the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech have been running more than 150 miles for charity.
The Hokies and the Cavs were unlikely partners Friday.
Virginia Tech runner Hunter Owens said, "It's a good rivalry. If weren't working so closely to them and we saw them at a tailgate I don't think we'd be getting along."
In the Fiji Run Across Virginia, the two rivals will do just that.
The Phi Gamma Delta fraternities from both school are running to raise money for cancer research. The Hokie frat members split the run from Blacksburg to Lynchburg.
All together, the two fraternities they will run more than 150 miles.
"It's very taxing especially when the weather is cold . .We knew there would be a little bit of snow today there was some earlier," Owens said.
But, knowing that each step they take will help a family or person with cancer keeps them going.
Virginia tech runner Kevin Klose said, "We ran 90 miles yesterday and raised $42,000. What did you do the day after Thanksgiving?"
And these fraternities say giving up their time with family this holiday to help others is worth every step.
The Virginia Tech FIJI members will pass off the run to their UVA brothers later on Friday.
At Saturday’s UVa and Tech game, fraternity members will present a check to The V Foundation for cancer research. The two schools have raised more than $42,000 for the foundation.
