Students Collect Cans to feed Hungry

A big contribution from an Averett University group will help a Danville food shelter get through the holidays. The university's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee collected more than 1,500 cans of food. They delivered them to God's Storehouse on Westover Drive Wednesday. Here's the twist. They received almost a third of the donations in October, when the group used shopping carts to go trick-or-treating for cans!
Meredith Schwane, Averett Junior - "We wanted to actually go and talk to people and let them know what they were doing, so that's why we used the shopping carts."
Tyler Crump, Averett Junior - "It was funny to see college guys in football coming up to your doorstep, and they assumed that we were asking for candy when we would come up asking for food."
Another activity in the works for this group, a penny drive in March.
