Roanoke Wants to Protect Carvins Cove From Development

The city of Roanoke wants to make sure Carvins Cove is protected from development. City Council approved a resolution Monday for a conservation easement of over seven thousand of the 12-thousand acres, making it one of the largest such easements in Virginia. Council passed the issue unanimously Monday afternoon. Carvins Cove is a source of water for both Roanoke City and Roanoke County and a destination for mountain bikers and water sports enthusiasts.
Beverly Fitzpatrick, Roanoke City Council - "We would be in terrible trouble without Carvins Cove. Of course, with the water authority, we've changed the way we do water... we're not as dependent on that one piece of water."
Steve Buschor, Parks & Rec Director - "Right now, recreationally, we have about 40 miles of mountain biking trail from not just our area, but from the region itself."
The parks and recreation department has been working for the last 11 months on a conservation plan for Carvins Cove. This easement was one of the first steps to protecting that green space.
