Danville, VA - Officials with the Danville Humane Society tell us an ordinance to ban the constant chaining of animals will soon be law. The decision came at Tuesday night's city council meeting.
Under the new rules, which begin July 1st of next year, no pet can be tied up for more than four hours in a 24-hour period.
The following rules will also apply:
- Owners cannot chain a companion animal when the temperature is below 32 degrees.
- A pet under 4 months old will not be allowed to be chained.
- Owners cannot tie up a sick or injured animal.
- Also, animals left outside for the allotted four hours per day will have to be on runners or chains attached to swivel hooks.
The Danville Area Humane Society has committed $10,000 to help people purchase chain link lots for their dogs. A requirement will be that the Humane Society will also be allowed to spay/neuter the dog.
