Shelley Basinger is one of the early birds at ABC-13. She is a co-anchor for the two-hour morning show Good Morning Virginia and anchor of ABC-13 News Midday.
Shelley's done it all during her time at ABC-13. But there are a few assignments that stick out the most in her memory. While a reporter in Danville, Shelley spent several months on her "Restaurant Report" series, where she investigated cleanliness at area dining rooms. Since she loves politics, Shelley enjoyed heading to Richmond to cover Governor Bob McDonnell as he was elected into office. But one of her favorite moments was in 2009 when she swam with sharks in Atlanta as part of ABC-13's Virginia Tech/Alabama pre-game special.
When Shelley's not in the newsroom, you may see her out in the community giving back. She's been a "Big Sister" for Big Brothers, Big Sisters since 2009. Her "little" - now a teenager - is her favorite movie and shopping buddy. Shelley also serves on the Board of Directors of the Junior League of Lynchburg, a community-service organization with a mission to raise money for area non-profits.
Shelley fell into the world of broadcast news at UNC-Chapel Hill. There, she anchored and reported for UNC's live news broadcast, Carolina Week. During college, she also worked as a news intern in Durham, North Carolina. She assisted the station's "Troubleshooter" by investigating consumer cases and going on undercover assignments.
Born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, Shelley spent her childhood and teen years competitively dancing. She still cheers for the Tar Heels - especially in basketball - and enjoys making regular trips home to see her family and baby nephew.
